Job Description

Are you keen to work somewhere that’s stimulating and friendly, with loads of opportunities for growth and plenty of freedom to make a real impact? This could be the place for you!

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join us at INSHUR; we are based in sunny Brighton (sea, chips and seagulls included) and we split our work between home and the office (hybrid working) which typically includes working from our Brighton office three times per month.

You’ll be working on re-inventing insurance in exciting markets across multiple territories including the UK, US and the Netherlands, and new European countries as we expand.

Supported by (and reporting to) the Engineering Director you'll be joining a friendly team of 30 who believe in autonomy, trust, radically candid feedback and producing high quality work

We’ve got a great team in place and are a people amp; culture-first business (check out our Glassdoor reviews). We value high performance and care deeply about making INSHUR feel like a place where everyone is building something really special, that we can all be proud of, and doing it with friends.

What you'll do

As our Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for enabling high performing teams of engineers to produce their best work, through their tenure at INSHUR. You’ll oversee the engineers growth from hiring, onboarding, career development, progression, wellbeing and beyond. You will spearhead engineering and people initiatives and contribute to best practices, working closely with engineering leadership, scrum masters and the people team. This is a new role for us and a real chance to make the role your own, shaping the future of a growing startup and the people who make it.

The below is a guideline of skills that we think would make you successful in this role. However, our hiring process is much more around aptitude and passion so don’t worry if you’ve not used a particular tool or checked off all the skills and experience listed above.

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Have experience leading high-performing engineering teams of developers and testers and have in the past helped grow an engineering team, ideally within a startup environment.
  • Are an engineer at heart and understand software engineering well - we want to hear from people that have a background in software engineering, but we’re not hung up on the technology.
  • Expertise in administering performance appraisals, managing conflict amp; resolution processes
  • Understand the importance of career development within a software engineering company of individual contributors and care deeply about people and their growth.
  • Are passionate about diversity and inclusion across the organisation.
  • Understand the value of coaching, not micro-managing.

Your colleagues say you are:

  • Someone who inspires, motivates and lifts others and someone who’s able to convey a compelling vision and gain commitment to goals.
  • A great communicator, you listen and act with compassion.
  • A team player, collaborative and influencing.
  • Intuitive, you know how and when to act.
  • Someone with a high level of emotional intelligence

Things we’ve been working on recently (and you’ll likely be working on too):

  • Process improvements and optimising the team
  • Working on Influencing ways of working, and improving overall performance of teams
  • Building cutting edge customer experiences for commercial auto customers

What we offer

Our budget for this role is 65,000 to 75,000 and we will take into account any previous experience and location of work when agreeing on the final offer.

We offer all our employees stock options and we will pay into your pension monthly. We've also built a benefits package that invests in our people’s long-term personal and professional growth and wellbeing. Here’s a sample of what this includes:

  • 30 days of holiday annually in addition to bank holidays
  • Private healthcare scheme for you and your family
  • Life Insurance
  • Up to 13 weeks of parental leave at full pay, regardless of your gender
  • Flexible working hours
  • Annual personal training allowance and regular learning opportunities
  • Monthly flexible wellbeing allowance to help you stay healthy and productive
  • Access to Employee Assistance Program

It goes without saying that we provide everyone with a laptop, monitor, top of the range kit, and any software you need.
