A quick look at the role.

The role of the Regional General Manager (North) is to provide leadership and direction of the overall business units in the region within the Specialist ServIces Division for which they assume responsibility. Ensuring successful delivery of all commercial, health and safety and operational results, the RGM is responsible for all aspects of the regional business incorporating 3 x Hazardous Waste Depots and Transfer Stations, the Central and Northern Region Tanker Fleet and the operating platform that is the Integrated Resource Management business function managing a variety of corporate sized clients, primarily in the manufacturing industry but with some bespoke clients with specific requirements.

The RGM will be part of the Senior Management Team within Specialist Services Division and as such will be involved in the planning and input for the strategic direction of travel for the business.

The role has 7 direct reports 3 x Hazardous Waste Depot Managers, 1 x General Manager Tankers Liquid Waste, 3 x Business Managers.

Plus 85 indirect reports.

  • Visually lead, develop and improve the health, safety and environmental culture through incident reduction. Focussing on process and human safety by implementing and monitoring adherence to rules and lead indicators in line with the balanced business plan, working safely tracker and individual performance targets. When required will perform incident investigations.
  • Lead the thinking and planning for delivering business growth within region, by shape business objectives through rigorous planning, execution, communication and evaluation and being involved in the external profiling of Biffa, by personally making an impact on key external players/stakeholders.
  • To control and review financial and operational performance, managing operational assets and /or staff, to deliver a profitable business with great customer service standards. Managing financial performance reporting, budgeting and forecasting to required deadlines. Actively manage to business scorecard KPI’s, by setting budgets, reviewing and taking appropriate action to ensure optimum return on assets.
  • Provide clear leadership across all sites in within region and create an exceptional management team; develop and inspire people to work together to achieve objectives; manage team and individual performance to provide excellent business results.
  • Provide account management support for both existing sales and new sales within region, by creating a platform for sales growth.
  • Drive a culture of growth and continuous improvement through engagement with workforce, continuous feedback loop with reports, management of standards at individual and site level, and through championing development of employees through training and experience.
  • The job holder must be able to lead, coach, inspire, support and motivate their team and always be working towards being the best.
  • The job holder must meet deadlines and measure the performance of the sites through KPIs. These KPI’s are to be used to effectively manage the day-to-day operation, taking appropriate action to ensure they are met or improved upon.
  • Forward planning by developing methods that will meet any new legislative changes or providing innovative new service offerings for our commercial team to sell into.

Requirements

Here’s what we require:

  • Business Degree (or equivalent experience in a senior position)
  • CPC
  • IOSH
  • CoTC Hazardous (Desirable)
  • Extensive management experience of a B2B service delivery region/area
  • Direct experience at delivering revenues through SME and Corporate sales channels and the ability to support key accounts
  • A demonstrable track record of positively impacting commercial and operational performance is essential
  • Lean Management Understanding
  • Extensive experience of profit amp; loss management
  • Previous Industry experience
  • Extensive transport / logistics knowledge
  • Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation environment
