Job Description

Role purpose and overview

The Telegraph needs a Social Media Video Editor with excellent social media and creative video editing and producing skills to maximise the potential of the stories we tell using social media.

You will have the chance to work across a variety of content in a fast-paced newsroom, alongside some of the country’s best journalists in their field. This is an exciting challenge to make a real impact in driving subscriptions and increasing engagement.

Key responsibilities

  • Create, edit and publish videos with social audiences in mind, specialising in short form and vertical formats
  • Shoot and edit projects including attending external shoots, voxpops and packages created with Telegraph and agency footage
  • Inform best practices for scripting, presenting, shooting and editing footage. Confidently deliver this, plus on-the-fly feedback, to both Telegraph writers and the wider Social team
  • Edit cutdown versions of our long form YouTube series using knowledge on trends and best practice across Insta, Tiktok, Snapchat amp; Youtube Shorts to inform your editing
  • Oversee original social-first content series
  • Use data and analytics to inform onward strategy. Make smart onward decisions based on these findings
  • Creating opportunities to drive traffic to the website and generate subscriptions
  • Flexibility to work across a seven day rota to ensure coverage of key news events

Key skills

  • Experience making videos ‘go viral’ to reach large audiences. An understanding of how to game algorithms and capture audiences by creating a three-second hook
  • Setting strategy, presenting ideas and convincing others to follow best practice in previous roles
  • Worked in a social media role with a good understanding of content production
  • Experienced in video production and editing using for social media using Adobe Premiere, preferably within a national quality publisher
  • Strong creative storytelling and scripting skills
  • Proven track record of driving follower growth across diverse social platforms and nurturing engaged communities
  • Competence speaking ‘language’ of social; understanding how to connect with audiences on different social platforms
  • The ability to work comfortably both independently and as part of a team
  • Good at fostering and building relationships in person and online, individually and at scale
  • A firm grasp of The Telegraph’s brands and journalistic values, both in digital and in print
  • Understanding of analytics tools, and the ability to make decisions about social media activities based on analytics when appropriate
