Job Description

The role

We are recruiting an opto-mechanical engineer to join the team. You will be responsible for the opto-mechanical design function including device sub-assemblies and systems incorporating the positioning of bulk optics such as mirrors, beamsplitters and optical mounts and the packaging and enclosures design for laser systems. You will look at a range of design issues including temperature variance performance, vibrational performance, heat loading, mechanical stress and select designs and materials to alleviate these. You will support the development of our product portfolio incorporating elements including cryogenic systems, vacuum systems and optoelectronics.

You will work in a cross-disciplinary team which includes quantum photonic engineers, mechanical engineers, optical physicists alongside business developers and product designers. The successful candidate will be involved in both internal research and development projects delivering technical support in mechanical design as well as involved in developing custom solutions for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Utilise computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed 3D models and technical drawings for various mechanical components and systems including opto-mechanical design, modeling, testing, and verification, with focus on packaging, thermal management, and vibration isolation.
  • Optical system design incoporating bulk optical components such as mirrors, beamsplitters, optical mounts, filters as well as fibre optic systems.
  • Participate in design reviews, communicate with cross-functional teams, and contribute innovative ideas to enhance overall product design and development processes.
  • Identify and engage key suppliers, develop bills of materials.
  • Design for fabrication, and test prototypes and subsystems.
  • Supporting development of risk management plans and risk resolution and supporting reliability analysis and continuous improvement.
  • Build, assembly and testing of new designs and systems.
  • Conduct thorough analysis and simulations to assess the structural integrity, functionality, and performance of designed prototypes, making necessary adjustments for optimisation.

The company

Aegiq are backed by leading venture capital funds and are expanding the team to bring pioneering products to market with early customers including the National Quantum Computing Centre and the UK Ministry of Defence amongst others.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant start-up at an early stage of the company’s development and can professionally develop in tandem with the growth of the business. You will be a highly motivated expert in your area and looking to deliver change in technological capabilities by bringing novel solutions to market.

Our offices and labs are located at the Sheffield Technology Park, which is within minutes of walking from the Sheffield train station, central public transport interchange, and has a secure bike storage and car parking.

Requirements

  • 2:1 or above in an engineering discipline and/or 2+ years industrial experience with optical systems.
  • Proficient in the use of Solidworks or Autodesk AutoCAD/Inventor in both 2D and 3D
  • Experience of the product design lifecycle from initial specification capture to concept designs through to a finished product
  • Experience working with external manufacturing partners
  • Experience in design for manufacture
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Highly motivated self-starter with exceptional organisational skills
  • Proven ability to rapidly accumulate new expertise
  • Experience in developing reliable structural systems including thermal, mechanical and vibrational management.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Ideal candidates would also have experience in the following:

  • Product design and conformance
  • Laser system design
