Space Forge are delighted to offer the following placement opportunity: SPIN - Ramp;D for Standardisation

Fasteners are an integral part of engineering design, whether it's a desk, a car or a satellite, they are quite literally the nuts and bolts holding systems together. Standardisation is key to quality and consistency. This internship offers hands-on Ramp;D and testing of bolted connections for satellite hardware. The Spintern will evaluate, improve and expand upon current standards, defining selection of fasteners, torques and secondary retention methods.

The project is to Standardise applied torques based on joint and fastener parameters. The desired output of the project is the creation of a database of required torques for various bolt and joint parameters that can be used by the engineering team. Another desired output is an investigation into secondary retention methods for these fasteners such as adhesives, heli-coils and thread lock.

The project will involve research, calculation of joint parameters, followed by verifying and testing results experimentally to produce a torque table for bolted connections. The SpinTern will design the experiments, carry out risk assessment amp; test planning, create test coupons on CAD and CNC machines, conduct the tests, and record and document the results that will inform standardisation.

Requirements

Academic: Studying or just completing an Engineering Degree.

Minimum requirements:

Are studying or just completed an Engineering degree

Is eligible to work in the UK without a visa

Is willing and able to learn new skills rapidly via online research and experimentation.

Ability to work effectively independently with a motivated and driven attitude to work.

Capable of self-managing time and working to a deadline.

Able to write coherent reports, use spreadsheets, and document their work.

An interest and enthusiasm for the project.

Able to work in person for the duration of the internship, as onsite testing will be required.

Desirable requirements:

Studying or just completed a Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Space Engineering degree.

An understanding of the mathematics of bolted joint loads and torques and current industry

• 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate
• 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
