Job Description

Quantum Engineer

COMPANY OVERVIEW

At OQC, we see a brighter future for all, enabled by quantum.

Together we are pioneering cutting-edge quantum computers that unlock transformative discoveries, from advancing drug modelling to revolutionising battery technology. Our mission is to put quantum in the hands of humanity, empowering customers to discover new commercial and scientific frontiers.

When you join OQC, you become part of a diverse team of innovators, creators, and problem solvers. We bring together some of the brightest minds in quantum physics, nanotechnologies, hardware, software and commercial operations. Each team member brings a unique skill set and are united by our values, which guide us in everything we do - how we work, how we collaborate and how we shape the future of our industry.

Are you ready to help us build this future?

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking to speak to all areas of expertise as an OQC Quantum engineer, you will have the opportunity to research, design, measure and characterise quantum computing hardware. Drawing on your experience in working with quantum systems during your PhD, post-doctoral or commercial work; you will develop methods to design, build and optimise commercial quantum processors. You will have access to our new purpose-built quantum laboratory where you will be a vital part of the quantum teams while we work towards our Ramp;D roadmap - closely with our fabrication team as new devices are manufactured and tested as OQC builds towards larger scale quantum computing experiments. Here, you will work closely on multiple and varied projects within our multi-disciplinary team of physicists, nanotechnologists, electrical engineers, software developers, and more towards OQC’s mission of building a quantum computer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We work in multi-disciplinary, cross-functional teams to develop and deploy OQC’s Quantum Computers. This means that responsibilities can be varied depending on skills across some of the following areas:

  • Design and simulate quantum processors for improved operation including low-error quantum gates and fast, high-fidelity readout.
  • Microwave measurements and characterisation of superconducting quantum circuits in continuous-wave and pulsed operation including processor calibration and benchmarking
  • Operation of quantum processing support-infrastructure including dilution refrigerators, control electronics and cryogenic refrigeration
  • Experience of qubit readout with dispersively coupled resonators
  • knowledge of cryogenic system up-keep including specifications and sourcing RF components for cryogenic systems
  • Measuring/simulating physical systems with electrical or quantum components.
  • Scientific analysis of design amp; processor limitations
  • Ability to distil and communicate scientific information effectively with the wider team
  • Align development of physical quantum systems, looking into fabrication side and theoretical quantum engineering
  • Running experiments to support our Ramp;D efforts with regular input into OQCs evolving technology development roadmap
  • Assure operational excellence of our Quantum Computers
  • Engage with customers and partners, creation and maintenance of process documentation, project plans and reports.
  • Representing OQC in scientific settings such as conferences, as part of collaborative consortia, and through the authorship of publications.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Relevant PhD or Masters within quantum research or industry experience
  • Be confident contributing ideas on how to improve experimental setups, to improve performance and innovate our technology
  • Have the ability to work independently or within a team collaborating on projects
  • Highly adaptable, good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of Python scripting/coding

We’re looking for and open to candidates with experience across all quantum disciplines, from experimental to non-experimental! Experience in superconducting Quantum Computing is not a must!

CULTURE

OQC is a values driven organisation. All team members are expected to strive to demonstrate respect, resilience, reflection and a recognition that we move forward and perform our best when we are working in a supportive and collaborative environment.

LOCATION amp; TRAVEL

This role is based at OQC’s offices, located in Reading, Berkshire. Our hybrid working model requires 2 days per week in the office.
