Legal Counsel at Checkout.com:
 
Checkout.com is seeking a talented Legal Counsel with strong data protection background to join our Legal team in London. As Legal Counsel you will work closely with all areas of the business and take a collaborative approach to solving complex legal challenges. 
 
You will be reporting to our Deputy General Counsel, VP Data Protection. The successful candidate will be able to handle a busy workload with minimal supervision, demonstrating excellent critical judgement, quick thinking and agility. This is a great opportunity to work on a broad range of projects across multiple jurisdictions and play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth.
 
You will be joining an expanding team in one of Europe's most valuable fintechs. Our mission is to be a legal team that exceeds expectations across the board, providing pragmatic and commercially focused advice, finding creative solutions to manage risk and becoming trusted advisers to our colleagues in the business. 

About You:

  • English qualified lawyer (2-5 PQE) with strong post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice
  • Previous fintech, payments, software, e-commerce and/or bank experience is desirable but not essential
  • Strong background advising on the GDPR and global data protection matters
  • Experience working in a start up or other fast-paced and dynamic environment is desirable but not essential

Extra marks if you have:
  • experience working internationally and on a variety of cross-border matters
  • additional language skills, French in particular
  • dual qualification in an overseas jurisdiction
  • relevant data protection or privacy qualifications

You will need:
  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
  • Enthusiasm for new challenges and skilling up in different areas of law 

What you will be doing:

  • This role is based in London at our global head office and sits within the regulatory and data team within our Legal department
  •  Advise on regulatory matters including compliance with regulations, the GDPR
  •  Produce and maintain a variety of internal policies and compliance related documents
  •  Collaborating with all core functions within the company and with the Data Protection Officer
  • You will help put in place and improve existing processes and support the business in launching new products
  • You will advise on novel and complex issues and provide clear advice on legal and commercial issues and risks
  • You will carry out research on various multijurisdictional legal and data protection issues
  • You will help the business continue to expand internationally; researching and evaluating new territories and providing creative, proactive and results orientated advice
