Contract: Permanent

Line Manager: Jonathan Horner

You’ll be joining Twinkl’s Web Features Team, working to implement improvements and add new features to the Twinkl’s website. You’ll work with both front (Javascript, CSS) and backend (PHP) technologies to implement feature requests for our customer facing site, as well as internal admin systems. We’re looking for someone who’s confident across the full stack who’s interested in modernising legacy code and realising new page designs for a high traffic (12 million visits a month), fast growing and missional business in the education sector.

The team itself is 7 strong and spans a wide range of experience levels, from student placement to senior team lead, working in Kanban to manage tickets through to deployment. The smaller requests/features are worked independently, with larger projects worked in pairs to ensure high standards through code reviews and collaborative problem solving. The nature of Twinkl’s request system means tasks are varied and fast-paced. Along with the main goals of each task there’s an ongoing need to update the existing codebase from older procedural code to an MVC based approach replacing any deprecated code as required.

In return for your work we can offer you a welcoming, social environment with engaging problems to solve and a pipeline of exciting, technically challenging work.

Ongoing projects/how you’ll spend your day:

  • Implementing new features / pages for both the front end and admin areas of the Twinkl website
  • Communicating with internal departments/stakeholders to understand and deliver requirements
  • Peer reviewing other team members code and offer constructive feedback for areas of improvement
  • Deploying code to live servers, monitoring and fixing any errors quickly

To succeed in the role, you will:

  • Be capable of maintaining older legacy code and producing new code following MVC design patterns
  • Demonstrate a high level of coding standards and security practices
  • Possess a genuine passion for coding and learning new technologies
  • Able to work to deadlines and communicate with stakeholders effectively

Key technologies:

  • PHP
  • JavaScript/jQuery
  • HTML/CSS/SASS
  • GIT
  • SQL/Eloquent

Requirements

We're interested in anyone who meets the following:

  • At least 2 years of industry experience as a web developer
  • Proven experience with PHP7
  • Able to quickly implement, test and deploy
  • Desire to identify areas of improvement to working practices and workflows

If you require a reasonable adjustment to the application/selection process to enable you to demonstrate your ability to perform the job requirements please include this at the foot of your covering letter. This will help us to understand any modifications we may need to make to support you throughout our selection process.

Benefits

In return for everything you can bring, we can offer you an exciting role in a fast-growing and dynamic business, with plenty of career opportunities.

Here’s a couple of the things that make Twinkl a great place to be:
