Job Description

Oxsed is an Oxford University spin-out founded during the pandemic to provide rapid, accurate and scalable COVID-19 testing. We have developed OxLAMP, a rapid nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) that can identify individuals infected by COVID-19 within 15 to 30 minutes. We have set up the UK’s first pre-departure airport rapid testing facility at Heathrow and are now deployed at multiple international airports within the UK. Long term, we aim to extend beyond COVID-19 testing and transform OxLAMP into the pillar to a host of diagnostic applications.

We are currently looking for a talented and highly motivated engineer to help develop our next diagnostic product based on OxLAMP. The successful candidate will work closely with the academic founders at the University of Oxford and potentially lead a small team of researchers as the company grows. This is a rare opportunity to join the founders to develop disruptive technology in the healthcare industry and to help shape and build the culture of Oxsed.

  • Work with the team to develop, optimise and establish new diagnostic products for different applications
  • Facilitate new consumable and system component development for manufacturing of diagnostic products and microfluidics applications

  • Identify robust system architectures that are scalable, manufacturable, and serviceable
  • Develop sub-systems for micro-fluidic processing
  • Ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements by applying design control processes (e.g. risk management, configuration management, requirements management and verification testing, etc.)
  • Manage project work based on development goal and communicate results effectively, guiding the team through data and observations on critical design decisions
  • Coordinate with cross-functional project teams to ensure timelines are met and assists the team to balance costs, timeline, and performance
  • Contribute to manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications
  • Contribute to the maintenance and housekeeping of a safe laboratory working environment
  • 80% lab based, 20% administrative

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering or equivilant with an emphasis on diagnostic device design and microfluidics. PhD desirable
  • Experience in diagnostic/microfluidic device development for analytical or diagnostics applications
  • Specific knowledge of current commonly used diagnostic/microfluidic device manufacturing processes and techniques and familiarity with related manufacturing equipment vendors
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability and working closely with contract manufacturers and vendors to ensure design intent is realised
  • Proficient in Mechanical Design using a CAD system (e.g. SolidWorks)
  • Working knowledge applying general-purpose simulation software to model and evaluate microfluidic simulation (e.g. COMSOL Multiphysics)
  • Ability to set priorities and execute with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication, collaboration, and presentation skills
  • Strong design of experiments (DOE), data analysis and documentation skills
  • A team player with a high degree of flexibility to take on different challenges
