Job Description

We are a rapidly growing organisation on a critical mission at an important time. Your role is central to that mission: the better we are at attracting, retaining and developing good people the more we can accomplish as a charity in the coming months and years. We endeavour to better our best in terms of learning, growth and bringing on excellent people; and our Head of People will embody this and have a track record of excellence in previous roles.

You’ll sit at the heart of Generation UKamp;I, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Lewis, in the Central team. You’ll help us evolve from start up to scale up, designing, standardising and streamlining processes and supporting a growing team.

You’ll lead us through a range of projects, policies and activities in areas such as, but not limited to:

  • Workforce planning and Recruitment as we launch in new regions;
  • On-boarding/exit and Employment Services;
  • Performance Management and Learning and Development;
  • Business Partnering;
  • Compensation and Benefits;
  • Employment Law Compliance;
  • Employee Relations and anything else that you feel can help our people and culture to remain the best at what we do as we scale.

Generation's mission is to train, coach and support people into life-changing careers that would otherwise be inaccessible.

We are a global not for profit, founded by McKinsey amp; Company, and a UK registered charity, delivering tailored programmes to recruit, train and place unemployed people into work. Through our unique approach we also solve a wide range of employer challengesskilled talent shortages, poor job performance, lack of diversity, and high turnover.

Generation launched globally in 2015, and has grown quickly to become the world’s largest demand-led employment initiative. We have placed over 39,000 people into roles (many of whom have suffered some form of adversity), using a bootcamp model working with over 2,000 employer partners to date across 10 countries and 26 professions. In 2021 we are running training to employment programs in London, Ireland, Leeds, Manchester and the West Midlands across tech, healthcare and customer service roles.

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic transformed the employment landscape beyond recognition, with young people (the majority of the people we help) being the hardest hit. At the same time, the Black Lives Matter movement has rightfully brought issues of social injustice and racism to the top of every agenda.

By joining Generation UKamp;I now, you will become part of an organisation which is determined to play its part in addressing both of these challenges for people in the UK over the coming months and years.

You can learn more about Generation from our founder here and see examples of our work here.

You’ll have three main areas of responsibility:

  • onboarding and induction of new colleagues
  • colleague engagement and retention of talent
  • reward and recognition
  • cultural development
  • continuous improvement of our overall diversity and inclusion picture
  • talent development and succession planning

2. Develop, implement and continuously improve People Management practice and performance including:

  • Measurement and reporting of People metrics to inform business decisions, ensure strong performance and proactively manage risk
  • Implementation and management of systems and tools to facilitate efficient people processes
  • Development of People policy, and related systems and practice, that support our culture, reflect our mission and values and are fully implemented and adhered to at all times
  • Training and coaching of managers to ensure effective and consistent management performance

3. Keep Generation UK amp; Ireland and our employees safe and healthy

  • Development of People policy, and related systems and practice, that ensure we fulfil our legal obligations, are able to show our compliance if required and are prepared for upcoming changes that affect our operations
  • Management of employee grievance, dispute and disciplinary processes
  • Oversight of Health amp; Safety policy and processes including
    • Office (facilities, fire procedures etc)
    • Accident at work records

Essential Qualifications/Experience

  • CIPD qualification (or equivalent).
  • 7 years experience of working within a generalist HR function at mid-senior with a demonstrable track record of excellence.
  • In depth experience developing and / or improving core HR processes (eg performance reviews, personal development, employee engagement, talent management, succession planning, recruitment, total reward)

You are:

  • Tenacious and good humored
  • Honest and direct
  • Able to challenge the status quo
  • Always learning
  • Aiming for the stars, with your feet on the ground.

You have:

  • A talent for finding talent
  • A bias to action
  • An ability to turn complex problems into simple solutions.
  • A deep understanding and demonstrable passion for the ‘why’ of the work we do.
  • The ability to get on with, and get the best out of, your new colleagues

As part of our application process we require candidates to complete a short test. Only candidates who have completed this assessment will be considered for the next stage. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an email with a link to the test.

Instead of a cover letter, there are 3 questions included in the application which ask for longer answers. These form a fundamental part of our candidate screening, so do please take the time to answer fully.

All employees are required to pass a basic DBS check.

Every role at Generation is open to applications from all sections of society. We believe in the potential of everyone; regardless of race, religion or belief, ethnic origin, different physical ability, family structure, socio-economics, age, nationality or citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other aspect that makes you, well, you.

We believe that the more diverse we are the better we become. More than just encouraging your application, we're committed to conscious inclusion that (we hope) cultivates an ethos of belonging, connection and shared purpose. We go further together. It’s this philosophy that drives us towards our mission. We open our doors to those who share this mindset.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates from marginalised groups. We will assess applications on a rolling basis and close this posting as soon as we have found the right candidate. We look forward to hearing from you.
