Job Description

Firmware Team Manager
Term: Full-time, Permanent
Based: High Wycombe, or remote (UK-only with at least 2-days-per-week in High Wycombe)
Salary: Dependent on Experience

Do you have a professional background in embedded software engineering with experience of inspiring and leading a team?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then we’d love to hear from you. We are looking for someone able to lead and line manage a growing team of firmware developers, as they develop our next generation of audio interfaces, synthesisers, grooveboxes and MIDI controllers.

What you’ll be doing
Leading a team of 10+ firmware engineers you will be reporting to the Electronics Firmware and Hardware manager, collaborating closely with the wider engineering leadership team. The company has a flat structure and the role has a broad scope involving a wide range of activities from upstream new technology investigation, product development and delivery, to ongoing maintenance of products in the market. You will need to acquire deep understanding of the products, business needs and stakeholders to enable informed and pragmatic decision making. You will provide leadership and coaching to your team, developing their capability and productivity to meet the growing needs of the business.

Key activities

  • Leading a team through regular 1:1s, goal setting, feedback, appraisals and career progression planning
  • Energising the team, staying focused on the key goals whilst fostering a sense of fun and creativity
  • Working closely with Software, DSP, Quality Assurance and Production Engineering teams to ensure that development, test, build and strategic considerations are aligned
  • Representing the team’s interests in technical, status, roadmap and staffing meetings
  • Reviewing firmware team development approaches and plans, providing objective critique
  • Continuously evolving tools and processes to ensure delivery of efficient, high quality code
  • Selecting appropriate staff for firmware projects and where appropriate engaging with contractors to achieve business goals
  • Identifying common technologies cross-product to leverage scale and maximise ROI
  • Making data driven proposals and option analyses to steer effective decision making

An ideal candidate is likely to be

  • A good communicator who is able to articulate complex problems to a range of audiences
  • Experience in a range of firmware development languages, architectures and tools e.g. C, C++, scripting, bare metal, RTOS, Linux , DSP, SVN, Git, Jenkins
  • Knowledgeable in design and development methodologies e.g. requirements capture, story boarding, UML, TDD, unit testing, XP, automation
  • Empathetic to the needs of the team, business and customer
  • Someone who can inspire by setting an ambitious but realistic vision and then motivate a team to achieve it
  • Able to anticipate business needs, assess market trends and guide technology choices
  • Familiar with stage gated and agile development approaches
  • Comfortable collaborating closely with electronics engineers on embedded systems, balancing the implications of decisions on both electronics and firmware disciplines
  • Capable of rolling up sleeves and engaging directly in development/debugging when occasionally needed
  • Passionate about audio, music and music technology
