Job Description

Job Purpose

Tom’s Guide wants to provide our readers with the very best guidance, ideas and advice when it comes to making purchasing decisions for their home. From appliances to smart tech, from homewares to furniture, we aim to be top of the organic rankings for relevant search terms and provide highly optimised, insightful articles on how to make the right choice. The Staff writer, Homes will be responsible for ensuring our websites enjoy maximum visibility in selected category areas by writing reviews, news stories, and other content related to smart homes and appliances.

We are happy to consider applications from candidates based in our Bath or London offices or those who would work remotely.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Homes Editor to set priorities and story ideas
  • Write high quality articles on product-based/buying topics
  • Ensure content is published and marketed effectively through the use of push notifications and social media
  • Create and regularly update content, especially over key commercial events such as Black Friday, Boxing Day sales
  • Organize and carry out effective, objective reviews of products.
  • Monitor rankings performance of key terms in the sector and ensure our content ranks well
  • Write associated content such as analysis, opinion and interviews
  • Attend key industry events
  • Break news where relevant
  • Establish strong industry contacts with leading companies to ensure we receive news and products for review.

Requirements

The successful candidate should demonstrate the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • A keen interest and understanding of home and smart home products. We don’t expect you to be an expert initially, but you’ll grasp the challenge of becoming one very quickly.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills - from the ability to write snappy headlines to tight grammar control, through to the ability to choose just the right image to attract readers.
  • Ability to deliver content quickly and efficiently.
  • An interest in and understanding of analytical and SEO tools.
  • Self-motivation. The team is split across several offices and continents, so you’ll need to be able to work independently and be willing to attend meetings at other offices as required
  • A ruthless approach to success - you’ll be able to combine coming up with transformative ideas with a determined approach to ensure they are delivered
