Think 111 First is a national model that offers people a different way of accessing healthcare. The aim is to ensure our EDs are kept free for those who need them the most and to make it easier and safer for patients to get the right advice or treatment when they urgently need it. It will also help protect our capacity during the winter, as well as maintain COVID 19 social distancing measures.
Anyone calling 111 will have their details taken by a call handler and asked an important set of initial questions, to establish whether an emergency response (for serious or life threatening illness or injury) is required and, if not, to gather further key information. If ED is flagged as the likely outcome the caller will be listed for a call back, with possible video consultation, from a clinician who will be able to offer advice and/or refer the patient to the most appropriate setting.
Recent pilots across BaNES, Swindon and Wiltshire have demonstrated that this level of enhanced clinical input supports more people to access the right care at the right time.
If you have broad competency in clinical practice and previous triage or initial assessment experience, we would like to hear from you.
