Job Description

We’re looking for a talented designer to join our growing team and help us to shape the future of communication.

We’re the team behind Element the all-in-one secure chat app and Matrixthe leading project for secure, open decentralised communication. Our mission is to make messaging as open as email allowing everyone to choose where their data is hosted, enjoy private conversations and ultimately be in control of their own communication.

We build open alternatives to apps like WhatsApp, Slack, Teams amp; more. Our early adopters include The French Government, and open source communities like Mozilla, KDE, GNOME and Wikimedia, while we’re working towards gaining traction in other areas like personal messaging.

You’ll be tasked with producing on-brand web pages and visual assets. Working in close collaboration with our design, marketing and product teams, you’ll be instrumental to helping us evolve and expand our reach to new users, customers and markets.

We’re interested in talking to both mid and senior level designers we care most about your skills, spirit and your ability to contribute.

Day to day, you’ll:

  • Work with our marketing team to produce materials for different audiences and campaigns; like landing pages, brochures, social media assets, graphics, emails amp; GIFs/Videos.
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas.
  • Primarily focusing on, push our websites forward towards our long term goals using a mixture of visual disciplines, design thinking amp; front-end development skills.
  • Together with the wider design team, level up our 'design ops' to produce consistent production assets, templates, style guides, design systems and improve processes.
  • Communicate ideas effectively, run and accept critiques and welcome feedback as part of the creative process.
  • Empathise with a wide range of user needs across the communication space from members of online communities to decision makers in enterprise.
  • Occasionally, roll with the punches on ad hoc design projects like creating swag for conferences, merchandise, business cards and whatever else comes up!

In your first month, you will: Design amp; build landing pages for a variety of audiences and goals. Input on and create assets for marketing campaigns.

In your first three months, you will: Improve end-to-end new user journeys from their first touch of our brand, through to product. Contribute to targeted performance based campaigns for specific marketing amp; sales opportunities.

In your first year, we will: Evolve our website, brand and workflows holistically to best achieve our goals, building something we're proud of.


You might be a good fit if

  • You have a strong portfolio which demonstrates your experience in digital design ideally gained within a marketing team at a tech-forward, product-driven company.
  • You have excellent visual design skills with an eye for quality typography, illustration, iconography.
  • You have solid experience in creating wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and sitemaps.
  • You know your way around a design tool or two. We use tools like Figma for rapid prototyping and Webflow to design and build our website. We’re also fans of pen and paper and reaching for the best tool for a particular job.
  • Bonus points for extensive Webflow experience.
  • You have top-notch organisation and multi-tasking skills. In this role, you’ll meet tight deadlines,handle multiple projects and work with different teams and stakeholders.
  • You care about collaborating and you're comfortable discussing the rationale for your design decisions with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • You’re comfortable with technologies like HTML, CSS, Flexbox and modern front-end techniques. It would be advantageous if you know front-end development to best realise your designs, or at the least have experience working cross-functionally with engineers to achieve your goals.
  • Never satisfied with the status quo; you come into work every day ready to transform the business.
