Job Description

Your opportunity to create stunning, immersive environments for the UK's most popular location-based VR experience, OTHERWORLD - a multi-player virtual reality meta-verse with thousands of visitors a week.

Virtual environments are at the centre of what we do, and we want to take it to the next level with new themed zones and top-secret first party content. As Environment Artist, you will join the talented team of artists, designers and programmers working on OTHERWORLD as it grows from a small island to the Disneyland of the 21st Century, and have genuine creative influence on what that looks like.

The island is always changing, growing, and developing in response to new technologies and insights, and you take pride in the fact that your skillset does the same. You have the artistic vision to infuse your environments with emotion and intrigue, and the technical mastery to implement them in Unreal Engine. You are as inspired by nature and architecture as you are by video games, and it shows in what you create.

You will be based in our East London HQ and initially report to Chief Creative Officer and co-founder, Ed Wardle. From June 2020, you will report to our Head of UX.

You will:

  • Conceptualise, communicate, and build striking game environments across a range of themes and biomes
  • Push the boundaries of what's possible in virtual reality, optimising for VR from conception to implementation and finding creative solutions to surpass technical constraints
  • Create a wide range of VR-ready assets in line with our established best practices
  • Combine environments with the 4D power of our unique immersion room technology to bring a new level of multi-sensory detail to your work - dreaming up both realistic and impressionistic uses of heat, wind, rumble and scent
  • Stay on the cutting edge of the industry, always considering how we can incorporate the latest technological advances into our art style and production pipeline
  • Grow professionally and help others do the same by participating in our open, knowledge-sharing, anti-dogmatic culture

To start Jan-March depending on your availability and the business's needs.

Requirements

  • 2+ years games industry experience designing, building, and populating striking environments
  • An impressive portfolio that showcases a talent and passion for your craft
  • Deep proficiency in Unreal Engine 4
  • Mastery of other relevant software packages (e.g. Maya/Blender, Substance Painter/Zbrush, etc.)
  • Familiarity with fundamentals of VR - such as frame rate constraints and the potential for motion sickness - and an understanding of their implications on environment design
  • Eagerness to pick up new tools, technologies and approaches
  • Ability to work with a high degree of self-direction and motivation whilst always being a team player
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

Advantageous

  • Have worked on a VR title either professionally or independently
  • Experience using source control (Perforce or Git) as part of a team
  • Understanding of multiplayer replication
  • Strong traditional fine art/concept art skills and training (illustration, painting, organic forms, colour theory, perspective, 2D amp; 3D design.)

Benefits

  • Fantastic opportunity to work with a leader in a new industry, scaling quickly with VC backing and a growing audience
  • Genuine influence on the creative direction of a innovative artistic endeavour in a cutting-edge medium
  • Competitive salary and share option package dependent on experience and aptitude
  • Performance related bonuses - share in the team's success whilst being rewarded for exceptional personal contribution
  • Discounts on VR, drinks and food in our venues
