Job Description

ED Validation (Sessional Contracts only)

You

You will be an experienced clinician with skills in managing adults and children with minor injury and/or minor illness.

Where?

We would recommend that initially you work from the call centre at Fox Talbot House in Chippenham where we can help you get familiar with the IT system and support you while you get used to video consultation. Once you are confident we can make arrangements for you to work from your usual place of work, or from home.

We can make special arrangements for those who would like to join us, but are currently shielding.

Which patients?

You will be consulting with patients who have been identified by the 111 service as requiring to attend Royal United Hospital ED or UTC, Great Western Hospital ED or UTC or Salisbury ED.

How

Using a video consultation app called GoodSamApp, you will consult with patients, have a look at their injuries, etc. and using your clinical judgement, decide on the most appropriate management. This may be advice regarding self-management, onward referral to a minor injury unit, a pharmacy, GP out of hours or ED or another appropriate service.

Will I need to learn a new IT system

The service uses a system call Adastra which tracks the patients, much like IT systems used in EDs. Adastra also gives you access to the patient’s GP records and previous consultations with 111, and enables you to document your consultation electronically.

What about prescribing?

You will need your smart card to enable you to prescribe electronically through the Adastra system. The prescriptions are sent electronically through to a local community pharmacy that you have selected close to the patient’s home.

How do I know which services are available to help my patients?

You will have access to a system called MiDoS. This tells you all the services that are available near to your patients and how to access them e.g. MIUs, Pharmacies, Mental Health Services, hospitals, etc.

What support will I have?

A local organisation called Medvivo who have been running the urgent care for over a decade will support you through an induction process. Colleagues from Medvivo will help you get familiar with the IT systems and provide technical support. If you choose to work at the Chippenham call centre there will always be other clinicians around to support you. If you choose to work remotely, there will be clinical help available by telephone, and if you get stuck with something that’s not clinical, (e.g. you forget the code to get into Fox Talbot House) there are co-ordinators available by phone 24/7.

How will I organise my shifts

There are 2 dedicated rota administrators who have been newly appointed into this role. Initially the shifts will be organised through a spread sheet, but in the near future an app will become available to make this process more streamlined.
