Jellyfish Pictures is a multi-award-winning Animation and Visual Effects studio with over 250 employees working across five UK studios and remotely all over the globe.

Our VFX credits include blockbuster movies such as Lucas Films’ Star Wars?franchise?The Last Jedi and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story;?TV Dramas including HBO’s?Watchmen and?Netflix’s?Black Mirror: Hated in the Nation.?Jellyfish has produced high-quality CG animation for DreamWorks Animation holiday special?How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, top-rated children’s?shows, Dennis?and Gnasher:?Unleashed(CBBC),?Floogals?(Universal Kids)?and most recently, has embarked on developing and producing its own original animated children’s content.?


Responsibilities

  • Create and design tools to help solve creative, technical and production problems that can work within the existing pipeline framework.
  • Contribute new features for existing tools and ensuring that those adhere to our overall pipeline philosophies and established artistic workflows.
  • Test and debug your own code, as well as code created by other members of the team to help ensure stability and consistency for users.
  • Manage deployment and release of code and communicate those changes clearly to other artistic, production and technical staff.
  • Work with internal pipeline production staff and the Head of Pipeline to establish the priority of tasks, and set deadlines and milestones for code releases.
  • Create efficient, good quality, code while maintaining accepted good practice guidelines (eg commenting, PEP8 formatting) to allow your work to be easily understood and handed over to other technical staff.
  • Create documentation of processes, workflows and tools to educate artistic, production and other technical staff.
  • Act as a liaison for communication of technical issues between production and artistic staff and the other technical departments such as: pipeline, IT, render and data I/O.
  • Support and work with other technical staff to troubleshoot issues and help find solutions to a wide range of technical issues.

Requirements

Key Skills:
  • Technical: able to create efficient, stable, and reliable code in a timely manner that meets the brief for the task as well as being able to meet expected internal coding standards.
  • Problem solving: able to analyse an issue to help find solutions through research and analytical thinking.
  • Communication: able to understand and interpret feedback from technical and artistic staff and implement changes based on verbal and written instructions.
  • Flexible: able to adapt to changing requirements and workflows and an ability to work and track multiple tasks at once. Able to work with others in a team, but also to work independently and find self directed results.
  • Knowledgeable: You should have experience with industry standard CG Animation or VFX productions workflows, the steps and software involved and some of the technical challenges that exist within the process.

Core Competencies:

  • Maya/Nuke/Houdini: We expect that candidates have some experience in creating tools for one or more of the core DCC's that Jellyfish use for CG animation and/or VFX content creation.
  • Python: You should have strong skills as it forms the backbone of our pipeline tools and systems, and although now officially unsupported by Python, 2.7 remains the current standard for, Maya etc. Experience in Python 3 would also be preferred.
  • Git: We use git for the source control of our code, understanding git branching, repositories etc is important to being able to deliver your work.


Preferred, but not essential:

  • Shotgun/Shotgun Toolkit API’s: We use Shotgun for production tracking, and Shotgun Toolkit for helping manage DCC integration with our pipeline. Having a high level understanding of the Python API’s that can be used for Shotgun and Shotgun Toolkit are highly preferable
  • Jira/SCRUM workflow: We use Jira for helping us work within the Agile SCRUM method for organising pipeline tasks. Experience working with this software and in the SCRUM methodology is helpful but not required.
  • Other relevant DCC’s: Eg: Substance Painter, Mari, Zbrush. These are all tools we use and having experience of them is useful
  • Other programming languages: C++, C#, JavaScript, mel etc. Any other experience with programming languages is always useful.
