Job Description

Global Partners Digital (GPD) is a social purpose company dedicated to fostering a digital environment underpinned by human rights. We do this by making policy spaces and processes more open, inclusive and transparent, and by facilitating strategic, informed and coordinated engagement in these processes by public interest actors.

A core component of our work is our role as the Support Unit of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC), an intergovernmental coalition of 32 member states who collectively advocate for the promotion of human rights online. We are currently seeking a highly motivated Communications and Engagement Assistant to join our team and contribute to the work of the FOC as it marks its 10-year anniversary.

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a focused and committed individual joining a dedicated team that is passionate about human rights. You will be expected to demonstrate initiative, strong coordination skills, and the ability to collaborate well with your colleagues and partners globally*.

Reporting to the FOC Programme Officer and working closely with the FOC Project Assistant, you’ll provide support to the FOC Support Unit to enable the Coalition to effectively achieve its goals and objectives. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the implementation of FOC’s communications strategy, focused on marking the Coalition’s 10-year anniversary;
  • Supporting external communications channels of the FOC, including day-to-day management of FOC’s online presence, FOC website and social media platforms;
  • Organising FOC meetings and events, including the Freedom Online Conference, the premier event of the Coalition;
  • Supporting effective communication across FOC stakeholders and networks;
  • Providing administrative support to the FOC and its members.

*Post COVID-19, the role may involve some travel to locations overseas.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A minimum of one year’s practical experience working in a professional environment;
  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field, including but not limited to international relations, human rights, communications and media;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated experience in providing strategic communications support, including producing high quality written content for a variety of different audiences, and day-to-day running of social media accounts;
  • Demonstrated experience organising large-scale events;
  • Ability to build collaborative and positive relationships with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Self-motivated and organised, able to work independently to meet deadlines;
  • A commitment to continuous learning and improvement;
  • An interest in international affairs, human rights and internet-related and digital issues;
  • Fluent written and spoken English.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Practical experience of working in an international or national bureaucracy, including international organisations and government administrations;
  • Practical experience in strategic communications and/ or public relations, including developing press releases, liaising with the media, and media monitoring;
  • Knowledge of and experience working with web analytics (e.g. Google Analytics) and social media tools (e.g. Buffer);
  • Practical experience assisting with the implementation of government-funded projects;
  • Practical experience of working with civil society, governments and the private sector, particularly from the global South;
  • Practical experience of working on human rights and internet-related and digital issues;
  • Ability to develop visual creative content;
  • Experience working with WordPress, and design platforms (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop);
  • Fluency in a language other than English.

Terms and Conditions

  • Working days: Full time
  • Start date: ASAP
  • Contract Type: Eight Months Fixed Term (with possibility for extension, contingent upon funding)
  • Salary: 25,000 - 30,000 (dependent on experience, pro rata)
  • Reporting to: FOC Programme Officer
  • You must have permission to live and work in the UK
