Job Description

As an Industrial Design Engineer within the Innovation team, you will be responsible for defining and contributing to the design of our next-generation solutions for medical devices and surgical robotics. You will become part of a talented team delivering cutting-edge technology and products for the operating room and will collaborate, as an industrial design expert, with a cross-functional engineering team including mechanical, electronics, quality, embedded/application software, supply chain, manufacturing and research experts.

Core Responsibilities

  • Create innovative user-centered design solutions, that combine usability, utility, manufacturability, and desirability, and see the design through from initial concept through to final production.
  • Participate in user and customer research, clinical labs, usability testing, and design proposals to user centered needs and insights
  • Define technical and ergonomic requirements and develop a range of solutions that synthesise usability, utility, manufacturability, and desirability
  • Aid in data collection and root cause analysis during usability testing
  • Contribute and maintain human factors program documentation as needed for the usability engineering file
  • Develop and execute manufacturable and cost-effective design solutions in collaboration with Engineering partners
  • Be part of an extended Ramp;D team and actively participate in cross-functional team meetings and other forums
  • Utilise a range of 2D and 3D tools and techniques to explore and develop designs and effectively communicate proposals
  • Plan and generate functional prototypes to conceptually explore ideas, facilitate learning, and validate design solutions
  • Capture and translate brand attributes into compelling physical forms with a focus on product semantics, ergonomics, and performance in demanding use cases amp; environments

Requirements

  • BSME, or similar. Post-graduate study or equivalent work experience preferred
  • More than 5 years of professional experience in industrial design and product development
  • Educated to degree level in Product Design, Mechanical or Industrial Design Engineering or equivalent.
  • An exceptional portfolio that clearly and consistently demonstrates a human-centered design process and successfully delivering products from concept to production
  • A bias toward action and an eagerness to support the team and the project
  • Excitement for working on difficult problems with a dedicated team of high-energy, high-caliber people
  • The ability to independently work, solve problems, and seek out information as needed
  • A strong aesthetic sensibility and artistic skill
  • Excellent storytelling and presentation skills and an ability to effectively communicate a user-centered point of view
  • A comprehensive set of prototyping skills - from quick low-fi foam models to fabricating complex functional prototypes
  • A solid understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and DFM considerations
  • Strong 2D visualization skills including sketching, storyboarding, and digital rendering
  • Strong 3D CAD and rendering skills to develop compelling and technically viable design solutions
  • Extensive experience with SolidWorks is required. Specific experience with class A surfacing is a plus


Non essential requirements

  • Medical device and packaging design experience
  • Knowledge of Engineering Change management processes and PLM tools
  • Knowledge in manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of risk analysis as specifically applied to human factors (e.g., AFMEA, UFMEA, URA techniques)
  • Knowledge in planning, scaling, documenting, and executing human factors program activities in accordance with FDA guidance and other relevant international standards (e.g., IEC 62366, IEC 60601, ISO 14971)
  • Good understanding of product development and general guideline regulations such as ISO 13485, ISO 14971, Design controls, robust
