Job Description

Twinkl's Reading Scheme is looking for a content writer.

Hours: 15 hours per week, weekday daytime availability is essential
Annual Salary: 10.50 per hour
Location: Work from home
Hiring Manager: Sam Turton and Emma Fitzgerald
Contract: 6 months (with the possibly to extend)

You will be joining the Reading Scheme team to write books that support the teaching of phonics and are in line with Twinkl Phonics. Our books are fun, engaging and fully decodable for EYFS and KS1. The majority of your time will be spent working with the production team (other Content Writers, Editors, Illustrators and Designers), engaging with product priorities to facilitate the highest possible quality of our books for our customer. Your weekly activities could include:

  • checking resources and books for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and Phonics accuracy;
  • ideating on project briefs and writing books which support the teaching of Twinkl Phonics;
  • collaborating with the designers and illustrators to create the books, giving feedback when required;
  • responding positively and professionally to feedback from editors;
  • demonstrating excellent communication skills with the writers, editors, designers and illustrators that you collaborate with;
  • writing SEO.

Requirements

Our ideal candidate will be passionate about giving back to the education community and keen to share their expertise with others in their team. The role requires you to work during the daytime, Mon-Fri, for the majority of your hours to ensure best working practice. You will ideally decide your working pattern alongside the rest of the Product team once in place so it would be desirable if you are flexible.

To succeed in the role, you will:

  • be a fantastic communicator who thrives when working in a close-knit team;
  • have detailed and up-to-date knowledge of the National Curriculum in England and the EYFS Framework, specifically, you will be a skilled teacher of Phonics;
  • have a flair for writing creative content and working collaboratively to inspire others;
  • be prepared to confidently work between different IT platforms, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint;
  • understand the teaching community, parents/carers in England, knowing their unique pressures and current educational trends;
  • have a drive for continuous professional development;
  • need a reliable computer or laptop with a fast broadband speed - you will be responsible for maintenance/repairs etc.

In this role, you will learn:

  • how to occasionally provide feedback to some of the team;
  • how to collaborate and ideate on writing engaging books following specific briefs;
  • how to work in ‘agile’ teams, allowing you to solve problems and change tasks quickly to meet deadlines;
  • how to collaborate with educational professionals based across the UK through our company focus groups and customer feedback requests;
  • how to create new products, from ideation stage to publication.

You’ll be working with:

  • The Reading Scheme team comprising of other writers, editors, designers and illustrators;
  • the Product Owner who you will take direction from;
  • the Operations Assistant who will facilitate your Agile working;
  • your own direct Line Manager who will be confirmed if you are successful.

We’re especially interested in anyone who also meets one, or a combination of, the following:

  • Essential Qualifications: Completed primary qualified teacher status: PGCE, B.Ed or equivalent;
  • Essential: Experience of writing creatively for children;
  • Experience: 2 years of full classroom teaching experience in EYFS/KS1 after QTS is complete and with knowledge and experience of teaching Phonics;
