Embedded Software Engineer (Measurement)

Job Description
As a Measurements Software Engineer at SamKnows you will focus on developing the measurement functionality that is at the core of our business. Our services are used by Internet Service Providers (ISP’s), Governments and Consumers worldwide to measure internet performance and reliability. We have more than 40 million homes around the world with our measurement agent installed in their modem/router, and many hundreds of thousands with our mobile app installed. Our measurement software resides in all of these.
Our measurement suite focuses not only on quality of service (such as throughput and latency), but also on quality of experience (such as Netflix streaming stall frequency, or Fortnite latency). We are always looking to develop new measurements for new services, and to improve the fidelity of our existing measurements.
What you will do
- Develop measurements for internet-facing and in-home services in C and C++.
- Work with third party content providers (such as Netflix and YouTube) to determine the best way to carry out a measurement and the appropriate metrics to measure.
- Integrate measurement functionality into our Router Agent, which in turn other team members will integrate into ISPs’ routers.
- Work with chipset vendors (such as Broadcom and Qualcomm) to make use of private hardware acceleration APIs where necessary.
- Debug and troubleshoot complex issues that span software, hardware, chipset and network problem spaces.
We’re looking for someone with
- Professional experience writing C and C++ (preferably modern C++)
- Professional experience in cross-compiling software for embedded systems
- Solid grounding in networking concepts, including TCP and UDP
- Experience with using Wireshark for investigating network protocols
- Comfortable with working with the Linux shell and writing scripts
- Professional experience using Git
- Familiarity with continuous integration
