Job Description

Role Purpose

The Senior Consultant role based in London is a critical component of the practice’s growth strategy and operational management. You will be a prominent and visible advocate of the Africa business intelligence practice in one of our most critical markets with clients (London and Western Europe). You will have the opportunity to engage with senior decision makers across the breadth of our client base, from private market investors to corporates and law firms, by helping them enter new markets, investments and relationships, and resolve challenging regulatory, ESG and reputational issues affecting their business.
Importantly, you will lead the BI Africa team’s efforts in conjunction with other ESG experts at Control Risks to articulate to our clients how increasing public awareness and resulting reputational risk, as well as greater oversight by regulatory bodies, necessitate the inclusion of ESG considerations in any transactional and counterparty due diligence. Engaging with new and existing clients in Western Europe, you will have the opportunity to define the BI Africa practice as a market leader in offering a holistic integrity and ESG due diligence offering.

The role therefore has the following objectives:

  • Lead in client engagement and account management in the London market, identifying and converting opportunities to win business and grow our profile in the BI marketplace, while promoting our ESG offering as a competitive differentiator.
  • Help implement operational best practice in the business intelligence team by ensuring consistent maintenance of exceptional standards in our work output in both proposal and report writing, and training and developing the team to improve their understanding of ESG considerations, frameworks and reporting standards.
  • Lead the conversion and delivery of large and complex proposals and projects for multi-jurisdictional and/ or multi-service line opportunities for clients engaging in Africa or facing ESG challenges.

The core deliverables you will be responsible for are:

  • Scoping persuasive, client centric proposals in response to a wide-variety of different requirements
  • Identifying opportunities to promote ESG due diligence as a critical component of traditional transactional reputational due diligence
  • Managing, from scoping to delivery, complex intelligence and analysis assignments across sub-Saharan Africa including those where scope of work includes an ESG requirement
  • Conveying analytical judgment and complex information in a confident, persuasive and accessible manner both verbally and in writing that helps clients to resolve uncertainty and make decisions.

The role prioritises the following key qualities:

  • An expertise in business analysis and knowledge of the commercial, regulatory and ESG risk challenges facing companies, investors, banks and their legal advisors working in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • An ability to think critically in the investigation, evaluation and interpretation of both open source and human intelligence information in the context of intelligence led investigations, and to apply that to a client’s situation
  • An ability to articulate the salience of identified risks occassioned by the nature of client transactions, commercial relationships, new markets and stakeholders and demonstrate a willingness and ability to inform strategic decision making and explore risk mitigation strategies
  • An ability to identify prospects for integrity and ESG due diligence services and ensure scoping of relevant projects reflects these considerations

Tasks and Responsibilities

Business development and brand building
  • Identify opportunities for external business development and brand building, with a focus on Western Europe-based clients with interests in sub-Saharan Africa. Engagement with clients should focus on broadening client understanding of Control Risks’ pre-transactional, counterparty due diligence and responsive risk management services to include ESG and political risk considerations.
  • Identify and manage a core group of (current and prospective) clients and buyers in Western Europe market with the aim of growing the volume of BI related business and broadening the suite of Control Risks services taken up, in particular, with a view to position ESG due diligence advisory services as a core component of transactional due diligence, market entry and responsive risk management services.
  • Contribute thought leadership pieces and other content to Control Risks' media channels, with a particular focus on specific ESG considerations.
  • Lead country-specific marketing campaigns with other service lines based on your understanding of the market opportunity for our clients and Control Risks.
