Job Description

We are hiring a Principal Engineer to lead the engineering effort in delivering our new software product - Frontier. Frontier is an AI driven decision intelligence product.

Who we are

Faculty is one of Europe’s leading applied artificial intelligence companies. We build, deploy and operate AI solutions to increase our customers’ performance and help them realise their full potential. We believe that AI should be trustworthy, impactful and beneficial across society. Those principles have shaped our work with more than 230 organisations across the public and private sectors as we help them use AI to understand more deeply, make better decisions and act faster.

To give an example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we built the COVID-19 Early Warning System to forecast hospital admissions and life-saving equipment up to three weeks in advance. The ground-breaking tool helped frontline workers at the NHS save lives. We also work with the Home Office on Counter-Terrorism initiatives - Faculty built an AI model that automatically detects both new and existing propaganda videos and stops them from being uploaded.

Why this is the role for you

We’re recruiting for a Principal engineer who combines deep technical expertise with experience building high performance engineering teams and working directly with customers. This role is vital as we continue to roll out our product, Frontier, to customers from a variety of industries.

You will have an opportunity to lead and grow a team of engineers, as well as having a broader remit around how we do engineering across Faculty. You get to be hands-on, working with state of the art technology on interesting, real world problems, whilst having direct access to customers and being involved in those conversations.

Few roles will offer you the breadth of problems to work on. One day you could be optimising bed management in a NHS hospital, another day working on military logistics, and another helping the UK with its net zero and renewable energy goals. The thread that connects all of these is our product Frontier, and our mission to improve organisational decision making through the use of AI and machine learning.

Frontier elevates an organisation from decisions based on data, to decisions based on understanding. It connects to their business processes and allows our customers to understand what is happening, why it is happening, what will happen next and what you should do about it.

This is a leadership role in the Frontier Delivery team. The Frontier Delivery team is the customer-facing team that implements the product to the specific needs and processes of our customers. The core of this is mapping out complex business processes into software and includes training ML models, building data pipelines, integrating with operational systems and databases, and building intuitive and usable front-ends.

What you will do

  • Build and manage a small team of engineers to deliver and implement Frontier for our customers
  • Working directly with customers (both public and private sector) to improve their decision making; moving them from lots of data but very little understanding, to true intelligent decision making
  • We anticipate at the start you will be 40% hands-on, implementing customer solutions, building ML models, data pipelines and the computational twin.
  • Working with the Director of Engineering you’ll be a voice of leadership for our engineering guild - input into our engineering standards across the entire organisation.

Requirements

  • Significant experience building and deploying customer facing Machine Learning based systems.
  • Experience of building and managing a small team
  • Comfortable interacting with customers and being the technical expert in sales conversations
  • Frontier is a cloud based SaaS product built on Scala, Python, some Go and React for the UI. Experience with these would be helpful.

What we can offer you

The Faculty team is diverse and distinctive, and we all come from different personal, professional and organisational backgrounds. We all have one thing in common: we are driven by a deep intellectual curiosity that powers us forward each day. This curiosity pushes us to seek truth and understanding in everything we do, to execute work in a nimble and pragmatic manner, to foster talent in one another and always to challenge assumptions.

Faculty is the professional challenge of a lifetime. You’ll be surrounded by an impressive group of brilliant minds working to advance our goal of making artificial intelligence real. Our consultants, product developers, business development specialists, operations professionals and more all bring something unique to Faculty, and you’ll learn something new from everyone you meet.
