We seek a Research Fellow who shares our commitment to promoting and upholding international law and multilateralism as vehicles for driving global cooperation. Reporting to the Senior Research Fellow and Director, the Research Fellow will work on a range of public international law research projects aligned with International Law programme and Chatham House priorities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy

  • Produce high quality, innovative policy-focused legal research outputs, in line with International Law Programme and Chatham House strategic priorities;
  • Help craft creative projects across a broad spectrum of international law and related policy;
  • Expand our engagement with diverse partners and experts;
  • Deploy and shape innovative research methodologies to deliver ground-breaking research for policy and operational impact;
  • Support research and outreach by convening research events, conferences and roundtables;
  • Support the growth of our funding network by helping to develop funding partnerships;

People

  • Build and maintaining relationships with project funders;
  • Use people and project planning skills to ensure successful delivery of projects;
  • Manage project consultants;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to evaluate funding needs and opportunities to secure research funding;
  • Build productive and positive relationships across Chatham House to enable cross-team collaboration;
  • Maintain and develop effective networks with relevant external partners;

Delivery

  • Deliver complex projects, by defining objectives, drafting research and policy outputs, and identifying target audience(s);
  • Help maintain an overview of accurate budget management (including research, events and publications);
  • Raise project, Programme and Chatham House profile through the development of strong networks with law and policy experts and the media;
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for appropriate and innovative communication and dissemination of project findings;
  • Propose and develop events, and utilise your network to develop diverse speaker and attendee lists;
  • Chair and speak at events, as required;
  • Support others in the team with fundraising as required.

Requirements

Experience

  • Experience working on a range of public international law issues, whether in an academic, business, operational or public policy context, and with a practical and policy solutions lens;
  • Experience in delivering high-quality, policy-oriented research, including thought-pieces and policy recommendations for diverse audiences and external publications;
  • Knowledge of and competent use of research methodologies and activities;
  • Experience in coordinating the delivery of research communication activities, including identifying creative solutions to present research in innovative ways;
  • Understanding of successful fundraising for research and projects;
Skills

You have/are:

  • A public international lawyer with an ability and flexibility to carry out practical research in a range of legal areas;
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences;
  • An outstanding, authoritative communicator, able to present information and arguments persuasively;
  • Ability to assess different viewpoints and deliver impartial legal analysis in line with Chatham House's mission;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to build relationships both internally and externally;
  • A strategic problem solver, you understand how your research agenda fits within broader organisational strategy and societal frameworks;
