Asahi Glassplant UK Ltd. (AGI UK) is a subsidiary of Asahi Glassplant Inc (AGI), Japan. AGI specialises in providing premium quality chemical processing equipment from laboratory scale to manufacturing scale. Our wide range of products serve all chemistry sectors but especially the pharmaceutical industry. AGI was founded in 1950, is the market leader in Japan and now employs over 700 people.

AGI UK’s head office and electromechanical assembly facilities are based in Royston, Hertfordshire and we have a glass fabrication facility in Sutton, near Ely, Cambridgeshire. AGI UK is responsible for sales within the EMEA region but manufactures scientific instruments and scientific glassware that is sold globally via the AGI group.

A bit about the role

The Mechanical Engineering Manager is responsible for the management of the Ramp;D mechanical team in the UK. The mechanical team’s mission is to develop premium and innovative mechanical-only systems for chemistry processing in laboratories and pilot plants.

Reporting to the Head of Global Ramp;D, the Mechanical Engineering Manager will be expected to line manage a small team of engineers while contributing to the technical aspects of product development as an individual contributor. The time split between management and technical contribution will be approximately 50:50 and could vary depending on the project and circumstances.

To be successful in this role, you should be a thoughtful leader and a confident decision-maker, helping our people develop and be productive, while ensuring our products are developed on time. You should be a strong established engineer with a good background in developing new products from initial specifications through to production drawings. As well as providing innovative and well-engineered solutions, you will also be able to build a project plan, estimate effort and costs to work within project deadlines and create product documentation to form a complete product work package.

The list of responsibilities can be summarised as:

  • Managing and coaching a team of mechanical engineers to their maximum achievable potential.
  • Leading development projects to ensure successful on-time and on-budget project delivery.
  • Writing project proposals, planning projects and estimating time and costs.
  • Working on the design and development of new chemical processing products:
    • Creating new ideas and concepts and seeing them through to final working solutions.
    • Working in collaboration with commercial colleagues to create requirement specifications and product concepts.
    • Producing 3D CAD models, assemblies and full manufacturing drawings.
    • Applying theoretical engineering knowledge to design, develop, analyse and interrogate concepts and solutions.
    • Working with suppliers in procuring parts and managing project costs.
    • Hands on assembly and testing of prototypes, followed by identifying and resolving issues with the product.
    • Creating test plans, analysing data and creating reports.
    • Ensuring products meet regulatory requirements.
    • Creating and releasing manufacturing data packs.
  • Creating a safe and inclusive work environment to improve trust and teamwork.
  • Supporting, guiding and challenging the team to grow and succeed.
  • Collaborating and communicating with colleagues from other AGI Group entities in Japan, Italy, Switzerland and USA.
    • Infrequent international travel may be required.

Requirements

A bit about you

We would hope that the Mechanical Engineering Manager will hold the following attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or any equivalent experience.
  • Confident use of 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Proven abilities in mechanical engineering and/or industrial design.
  • Minimum ten years full-time experience in engineering or Ramp;D.
  • Demonstratable experience in the leadership and successful delivery of product development projects.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Strong organisational, leadership, coaching and technical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and requirements for product compliance, e.g. ATEX, PED, MD, GMP etc.
  • Experience in development of chemical processing equipment is a significant advantage.
