Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is a world leading independent policy institute based in London. As a global think tank, our mission is to help build a sustainably secure, prosperous and just world.

Research Partnerships is an income generating team at the Institute. It's goal is to enable the Institute’s research ambitions by growing and optimising external funding. The team focuses on private foundations, UK and international government bodies and ministries.

We have a new opportunity for a Research Partnerships Senior Manager who will support our research programmes to develop and deliver ambitious plans for growing research income. The role will be highly collaborative, liaising with colleagues internally and with funders and will support Chatham House’s grant-making expertise. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with extensive experience in research or grant funding and who wants to make an impact on fundraising at a major international think tank.

Principal Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of Research Partnerships, you will:

Strategy
  • Contribute to Research Partnership’s support of Chatham House’s fundraising work;
  • Undertake fundraising, prospecting and relationship management focused on major foundations and government funding bodies;
  • Actively promote best practice in research and grant management at Chatham House by identifying and implementing new and better approaches and driving efficiencies;
  • Support research programmes in drafting proposals, particularly for new and high-value funding opportunities;
  • Prepare policies for Chatham House staff on research management in collaboration with the Head of Research Partnerships;
People
  • Advise colleagues in research programmes in developing ambitious research funding plans;
  • Work collaboratively with the team to identify and engage new prospects to maximise fundraising opportunities;
  • Build relationships with funders;
  • Supervise and guide the work of junior team members;
  • Build positive relationships with internal and external partners;
Delivery
  • Support the management of all aspects of pre-award external research funding including advising on content and budgets;
  • Maintain active knowledge of relevant trends and practices in foundation and research funding.

Requirements

Skills and Experience:

  • Interest in international affairs, philanthropy or research;
  • Extensive experience working with or within a research institute or a funding agency or a similar organisation;
  • Experience in proposal writing;
  • Experience in fundraising for research, international development or related fields;
  • An organized approach to work and ability to multi-task;
  • Outstanding written skills including the ability to draft policies and reports;
  • Experience in managing programmes and projects;
  • People management skills, able to guide and manage the work of others;
  • Experience working with budgets and financial information;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to form positive working relationships with a wide range of people at all levels internally and externally;
  • Good IT skills including word, excel and outlook.

Salary: 45,000

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Location: Hybrid (Office/Home), minimum 2 days in the office per week.
